Lochmaddy Hospital

Whilst I was living on North Uist last summer I totally didn’t pay a visit to the abandoned hospital, that happened to be literally half a mile away from where I was staying, to take a bunch of grainy snapsh!ts. Somebody had evidently been there before & broken in, so access was easy.

Room Post

I’m going to be moving (yet again) fairly soon & as my current place is probably the nicest I’ve had in St Andrews it’s getting its own post (as well as an entry into the Setup timeline post).

Desk as always is the most important part.

Bought an oil painting (a copy purportedly done by Leonid Afremov himself) that hangs over the bed.

I have a washbasin, which I guess is nice even if some people are slightly bemused by it being there. Monitors on top of the drawers are just spares.

Frederick the bat hanging from the light. Speakers on top of the wardrobe aren’t connected to anything, they just sit there as conversation pieces as I don’t really have a use for them atm.

A few figures on display in cases on the shelves, but many more packed away in boxes. Two prints from a softer world which I framed but never hung as they’re too small to look right on the wall.

Audio gear, network kit & PS3 live on the floor next to the desk. Still mean to replace the dbx 223xl with something that has less hiss/noise but choices are limited – I bought a BSS FDS-366 but that was as bad or worse!

Sony PVM-9044QM Servicing

Something a little different, but in the current age of ‘disposable’ consumer electronics that are glued together it was a pleasant surprise to see how nicely designed this Sony broadcast/field monitor was for regular & easy servicing. Not sure if it’s actually savable or whether the phosphors are just past it, but I have to read more of the service manual before I begin twiddling any of the 50+ (!) adjustment potentiometers…

Disclaimer: prodding the wrong part of a CRT can be fatal, even after it has been disconnected from the mains.

Once you lift the case off the sides just hinge down to expose the potentiometers, with all the wires still attached so you can make adjustments whilst the unit is running.

Just an idea of how many adjustments there are, this PCB alone has over 30 potentiometers…

Once you’re done tinkering the PCBs just hinge back up!

St Andrews Freshers’ Week 2012 Balloon Drop

Something a little bit different, a still & video that I took of the balloon drop during the Friday night disco of Freshers’ Week at St Andrews this year.

Taken with the NEX 5N with the 16mm & IIRC set to 1600 ISO. Remember to choose 1080 from the YouTube menu if you want it ;)
